Jumping a Mountain Bike
Hitting jumps is one of the most fun things to do on a bike. Unfortunately it can also one of the scariest things to do for many people.
Getting a jump wrong, could have high consequences, however, if you slowly perfect your technique over time, and understand your limits, then there should be no reason that jumping isn’t simple and fun.
Whilst most people see the landing as the problem, it’s actually the take off where all the issues occur.
There are many factors to consider when jumping your bike; speed of approach, radius of the jump, terrain surface, tire pressure, suspension set up, body position and more.
You can watch countless tips and videos on YouTube but without some proper one on one feedback it’s impossible to know what you need to adjust or change to become safer and smoother through the air.
Jumping Lessons
Riders come to me with desires of learning how to jump, expecting to be clearing huge jumps in their first lesson. For some, this might be possible, for others, skills need to be stripped down to the foundations before progressing to jumps.
We want to keep things safe and we want you to progress at a healthy rate. I often see people clearing huge jumps with terrible technique and cringe, knowing that they are only making this jump by sheer luck. For these people, unfortunately it’s only a matter of time before the poor technique bites them hard.
Making sure the technique (and the bike) is dialled on smaller jumps first will set riders up for a successful progression towards bigger jumps!
Book in for a Jumps Lesson
Jumping lessons can take place at multiple locations around Vancouver Island, there are better places than Cowichan for these lessons, if you are interested in taking a private solo lesson in Cumberland or Stevie Smith Bike Park there will be additional costs involved for travel. This allows me to keep local lessons more cost effective.
Start your journey towards getting confident in your jumping technique and book into a private half day lesson.
Public Jumping Clinics are scheduled every few weeks and different locations on the Island. These clinics will be posted on this page when they are available and will not be subjected to additional travel fees.
